Review Of Meet The Frugalwoods

I think the whole arrogance is a projection, or jealousy. Yes I am jealous of the author’s foresight and careful planning. I leave you with a pearl of wisdom my economics teacher said. Existential crisis is symptomatic of first world people, in other worlds people are too busy battling real problems to consider what success is. What they do each day is succeed without any accolades and the first world tries to mimic that feeling.

Too often, we’re slotted into predetermined roles by societal expectations, family pressures, and, in my case, our own internal conception of what our lives should look like. When we’re able to stop the cycle of impressing others and spending money in an effort to assuage the frustrations we feel, true liberation can take hold in our lives. eur Identifying whether every dollar we spend is for a need or a want enables us to craft a life that’s focused on living out our priorities—not the priorities of anyone else or of society at large—but the priorities that matter most to us. In the pages that follow, I hope you find inspiration and motivation to pursue your best life.

I read your book in two days this weekend and although we already live frugally compared to most reading your story has me wanting to recommit to even more frugality in 2019.

It made me feel less crazy for my frugality weirdoness– free to abandon the extra throw pillows that don’t spark joy and the ability to dream about a life lived how you CHOOSE to live it. Thanks from a 23 year-old (just a baby!) who loves this blog, the vision, and your inspiring work ethic to write that book. And side note – I’ve been wanting to start a blog of my own, and I’ll be taking the plunge soon. I’m turning 40 this month and it is time to incorporate regular writing into my life! So, I’m on my way over to Amazon right now to pre-order. I am so incredibly happy for you and so anxious to read this book.

Meet The Frugalwoods: Achieving Financial Independence Through Simple Living By Elizabeth Willard Thames

I felt like she came across as unintentionally preachy, without a true understanding of how the majority of our country lives. She continually said that she knows how privileged she is to be able to make these choices, and then goes on to lecture about how those who can’t pay for a car with cash shouldn’t buy one. Tell that to someone in a community lacking public transportation, who needs to get to a job to feed the family. Her frequent return to her privilege felt like guilt for writing this book knowing that she absolutely had the deck stacked in her favor. b) She is absolutely deluded about why other people don’t have any money. Like, she marries her boyfriend who she begins dating when she is 20, and essentially makes an entirely other income accessible to herself?

Yet they won’t make blogs or pen down stories for loaylities they use each moment to survive. One of the most frustrating personal finance books I’ve ever read – and I generally love learning about people’s approaches to money. Somehow manages to be condescending, deceptive, and self-congratulatory all at once. They’re not retired; he works from their rural home and she’s a part-time blogger/SAHM. His forex job apparently pays him over $200,000 a year, which makes any lack of haircuts and restaurant meals pretty small changes in the scheme of things. Wouldn’t have bothered me so much if she didn’t seem so assured that their completely puritanical approach made sense. And really, who’d have wanted to read the book “we moved to Vermont and I wear winter coats from the garbage even though I don’t have to”?

I’m thrilled to finally share this news because my book has been a long time coming. I started this journey when I was pregnant with Babywoods 1 and the book will publish after Babywoods 2 is born! And what a wonderful journey it has been.

It’s naive, presumptuous, and grossly lacking in empathy to assume as much. We’d love you to buy this book, and hope you find this page convenient in locating a place of purchase. I do not know what Mrs. Thames made at her job, but even if it were zero dollars her husband pulls down a hefty six-figure salary that appears to have such cushy benefits that she paid nothing to give birth to her daughter.

And those are the times I remember. It honestly might’ve been more. Every single chapter in the book, in fact, was either completely thrown in the trash and Foreign exchange reserves re-written or heavily, HEAVILY edited by me. In keeping with my theme lately of not burying the lead, I figured I’d just go ahead and get it out there.

I don’t know if you read Modern Mrs Darcy but her book came out last month and she had some great posts about what her readers could do to help the book reach a wider audience. One of the most important was pre-orders because that can affect the overall print run and the book’s chance at success. It’s so great that your book is going to have a lot of material that’s NOT in your blog. I’m very interested in learning more about you, your backstory, and the Frugalwoods journey.

There are many people who transcend difficult childhoods to achieve at the highest levels. Who you will grow up to be isn’t imprinted at birth or predetermined by who your parents are. But it’s undeniable that the road was easier for me. I didn’t have to overcome anything in order to get where I am today. A memoir can only honestly represent a person’s lived experiences, which is why I felt it was important to share all of the ways in which privilege courses through my life. All of these privileges wove themselves together to form the basis for happy, warm, well-educated, well-cared-for childhoods. We didn’t suffer traumas as children.

Include a photo of your copy of the book if you’re so inclined (because you know how much I love photos!). This book is completely original material! It is NOT recycled blog posts! I wrote the whole darn thing from scratch and many of the chapters were rewritten upwards of a dozen times. Many of you have already pre-ordered a copy, for which I am most grateful. You got a free signed bookplate from me! Fear not, for if you too would like to snare a free signed bookplate , if you order my book by March 13, 2018 (that’s a week from today), I will happily mail you one.

  • On the whole, it was good food for thought, and it did prompt me to visit her blog and dig into the archives.
  • Maybe one day I will buckle down and put the words on paper.
  • Now the waiting for the delivery.
  • But she doesn’t stop there, she turns this in to a conversation about how makeup, all but the bare necessity of clothes, painting your nails, haircuts and really any act that contributes to vanity is worthless.
  • You are not a subject expert on frugality.
  • I learned about this book from another blogger and it seemed to be something I would enjoy.

Good luck and congratulations. I just pre-ordered a Kindle Edition and can’t wait to read it! You are an amazing writer and this book will be a success for sure. Excited to read it and inspired by your bravery to share what you create, both the book and this blog. I put in a request right away and my library has ordered the book! Can’t wait to learn more Frugalwoods wisdom (my husband has gotten quite good at giving me what he calls a “Frugalwoods haircut” 😀 ).

I randomly picked up a copy at The Strand bookstore in NYC. I started reading on a Saturday and was finished on Sunday. Interestingly, it was your book that introduced me to your website and not the other way around. Now I get to see how the adventure continues. My take home message from your book was it takes effort, time and determination to be weird and it’s absolutely worth it. Thank you Mrs Frugalwoods, your book was exquisite, please feel free to write another installment if you wish. I preordered your book on Amazon because I thought the title was intriguing.
